You do not need to be a confident swimmer to enjoy gorge walking in Wales.
It is one of the questions we are asked most often, particularly by people booking for the first time. Many guests have little swimming experience, and some cannot swim at all. What matters most is that you are comfortable being in water, can listen to your instructor and can kick your legs if needed.
Why Swimming Ability is Not The Main Requirement
Gorge walking is not a swimming lesson or a long-distance swim. It involves moving up a river through shallow water, over rocks and around natural obstacles. At times the water can be deeper, but every participant wears a properly fitted buoyancy aid, as well as a wetsuit and helmet.
Your instructor is with the group throughout the activity, explaining where to move, how to enter the water and what to do at each feature. The route builds gradually, so you can get used to the water before taking on more adventurous sections.
What if I cannot swim at all?
Please tell us when you book. We can then make sure the instructor knows before the session starts and can give you the right reassurance on the day.
You will not be forced into anything. Jumps and more challenging features are optional, and there are usually alternative ways through. The aim is for everyone to have a brilliant experience at a pace they are happy with.
If you are comparing the two activities, read our guide to gorge walking vs canyoning. Canyoning can involve more sustained water-based features, whereas gorge walking is often the better first adventure for mixed-ability groups.
Who Should Check With Us First?
Gorge walking is suitable for many first-timers, but contact us before booking if someone has a medical condition, a serious fear of water, mobility limitations or needs extra support. We will give an honest answer about whether the activity is likely to be right for your group.
